Holography is a cousin to Photography; why isn’t it considered art?
A hologram is made by splitting + refracting laser light to hit an object, and then recording how the light scatters. It’s almost like reconstructing what + how we see things from a light wave. I first became interested in the medium when I saw some videos from Holographic Studios on IG, and immediately was hooked. Then they shared they would be moving out of their 45+ year old location due to rising rents, and owner Jason Sapon would move to Hawaii while former assistant + artist Sy Rivers would open a new NYC location. Intrigued, I reached out to document the place before they closed.
Now opened in the new location in the East Village, Holo Studios is on a mission to recognize the medium as an art form. They’re doing monthly residencies with contemporary artists, all kinds of workshops, and so much more.
These are some selects from documenting them + trying to get their story published. A work in progress!
