This past January, Dawn Dawson was discouraged from attending a Crown Heights gym once disclosing her trans identity. After sharing the experience online, the discrimination rallied community outrage. Thus, the BK nightlife scene + local fitness industry teamed up for a night to knockout transphobia together.

“K.O.: A Celebration of Dawnii,” was held at OutBox Gym and organized by Whorechata. With proceeds going to cover future boxing classes for people who identify as trans, the night promised was full of gags: a drag lip sync battle, dj sets, pole dance performances, and of course everyone serving ALL the looks. A night of love, community, and celebration of each other was had.

So thankful for
Jerian Royal for sharing this important story, Lauren Bulbin for accepting the pitch + a MARVELOUS edit, Shane O’Neill for spending the night out with me + writing the piece, all of the performers who ATE, and everyone I met who were so kind!!!!
