Over 660k+ trees line NYC streets, and the surrounding beds take up ~400 acres according to a city estimate. While some folks prefer to use them for their dogs, and other passerby’s barely take notice, the usage of these beds have been a point of contention in many neighborhoods. To combat this, local groups have formed for a sense of caretaking + community.

Meet the Jackson Heights Beautification Group! Gathering once a week, they come together to connect with nature and each other. I spent an overcast Saturday with them as they traversed 37th Ave in pursuit of tree trimming, trash pickup, and replanting some liriope to prep for spring. Snow or shine, they’re the neighborhood watch for all things nature on their streets.

Thank you SO much
Andrew Hinderaker, who's response to what I sent was "you really made something out of nothing," aka the HIGHEST praise a photographer can receive!!! And to Jane Margolies for such a fabulous piece!! A real star of the show was how fabulous the sawdust looked!!!
